CONCEPT CLUB – Technology notes

• Interactive whiteboard
o could share sample lessons with members
• graphic organizers
• Leisl: intro to research process2
• could show intro to coordinate plane for math
• gallery simulations
• interwrite website
• how I captured screens from CD-ROM for chemistry lesson – “Ch. 11 highlights” – under “Interwrite folder”
• QUESTION: how to effectively use class time with these sample lessons; can’t only one student really use this at a time?; how to keep everyone else engaged? . . .
o pen
• button
• rocker
• left simulates double left-click on mouse
• right simulates right click on mouse
o connecting
• under “Devices” menu, go through “Find Bluetooth” process; then “Connect”
• HOWEVER, “Find Bluetooth” button is usually not available to press
• it looks like I just have to turn pad on before I start computer (waking up from hibernation is not enough)
o different modes
• Office mode
• can annotate things in Office programs and have option of saving annotations in native file
o saved annotations are unavailable for Interwrite revisions later
• fewer toys to use
• could make and save copies of a presentation for each set; annotations unique to each set could be saved and reviewed later
• Interactive mode
• more toys
• on an Office screen, annotations only exist on the part of the Office document currently captured on screen
o you can use the Interwrite “mouse” to scroll the Office document, but previous annotations will be lost
• Graphing calculator
o Module 0: Getting acquainted
• different zones of the TI-84 Plus
• how to reset defaults
• implied multiplication with parentheses
• use of the “delete/insert” key for editing entries
o Module 1: Building the bridge from arithmetic to algebra
• how to enter algebraic expressions
• how to save numbers as particular variables
• how to enter a linear function
• how to graph a linear function
• how to change dimensions of graph
• how to make graph “friendly” (takes into consideration pixel capabilities of screen)
• how to set up and adjust tables
o Module 2: Number Patterns and Sequences
• completing patterns – creating recursion on the home screen
• creating lists of term numbers with actual terms
• generating a sequence – building lists
• comparing strategies: scatter plots, linear functions, and tables
• This was the most difficult lesson to follow.
• I know that Texas Instruments will soon be coming out with a next-generation interface system for graphing calculators.
o This interface will be more like the point-and-click system used with computers.
o It seems the new system will be much more user-friendly than the TI-84 Plus.
o The new calculators will have the option to have a faceplate and functionality of the TI-84 Plus.
• For me to learn the TI-84 Plus interface system may be of limited value; however, I am still, at least, learning the functions of several of the “mystery buttons” on the calculators.
